Artificial intelligence first captured my attention because of what it reveals about human reasoning. Algorithms don’t just compute—they replicate our choices, our assumptions, and, if we’re not careful, our biases. What began as a fascination with how machines learn became something larger: a question about how society itself learns from the tools it creates.
AI now makes decisions that shape daily life. It determines which news stories appear in a feed, how medical systems prioritize patients, and how institutions allocate resources. The question is no longer whether AI can do these things but how responsibly it does them, and what values guide those outcomes. My work has always centered on that balance: ensuring that progress in AI also preserves public trust. That conviction eventually led me to found CivicSentinel AI, a company built to make technology more transparent, auditable, and aligned with the public good.
Academic Foundations at Stanford
My formal path into AI began at Stanford University, where I completed a B.S. in Computer Science on the Artificial Intelligence track. I’m now pursuing a Master’s in Management Science & Engineering, concentrating on Technology and Engineering Management. The university’s interdisciplinary culture is one where computer scientists regularly engage with ethicists, engineers, and policy thinkers. This made it clear to me how the impact of technology can’t be separated from its governance.
While at Stanford, I focused on research in AI ethics, alignment, misinformation, and risk modeling. The goal was always dual: to advance technical capability while ensuring that systems behave predictably and fairly. Those studies provided a foundation for the kind of responsible AI design I would later pursue in practice. They also demonstrated that good engineering depends on understanding not only what a system can do, but what it should do.
Turning Research into Responsibility
As my work evolved, I became increasingly involved in quantitative models of AI existential risk, algorithmic accountability, and computational risk analysis. These projects aimed to understand how complex systems behave under uncertainty and how their failures might ripple through society. What I learned from that research is simple but consequential: ethics isn’t an abstract discussion; it’s an engineering problem.
Responsible AI requires structure. Without defined checkpoints for data quality, model transparency, and outcome review, even the best intentions can falter under pressure. That realization shaped my belief that ethical design must be built into the technical architecture itself. The challenge was to bring that idea out of academia and into a form that civic and institutional partners could actually use.
From Stanford Projects to CivicSentinel AI
This transition took shape with the founding of CivicSentinel AI, which is a technology initiative devoted to building ethical, transparent tools for threat detection, misinformation triage, and algorithmic accountability. The company’s purpose is to give organizations the means to see where digital systems are being manipulated and to respond before harm spreads.
CivicSentinel’s first major platform, Sentient Watch, emerged from this mission. It applies structured ethical frameworks to real-time analysis, helping detect harmful AI-generated content while preserving privacy and free expression. The work builds on a central premise I carried from research into entrepreneurship: prevention is more effective than correction. Oversight should be designed into the system itself, not added after damage occurs.
Lessons from Building CivicSentinel AI
Building CivicSentinel confirmed that technical precision and ethical rigor are not opposing forces but, rather, they reinforce one another. Embedding ethical review into development cycles produced better results, both technically and organizationally. The process of documenting data provenance, auditing model performance, and recording decision rationales improved accuracy and interpretability.
These methods became part of the company’s culture. Every major release is reviewed not only for performance metrics but for potential social impact. That discipline has made CivicSentinel more resilient and trustworthy, even as AI capabilities accelerate. Accountability should be a design principle guiding every stage of development.
Leadership and Systems Thinking
Graduate study in Management Science & Engineering has broadened my understanding of how leadership and structure influence technology. Engineering decisions rarely exist in isolation; they unfold within systems of people, incentives, and governance. CivicSentinel’s operating philosophy draws from that systems mindset.
Ethical engineering benefits from the same rigor as technical design: defined responsibilities, clear documentation, and measurable standards. This approach ensures that AI progress remains sustainable, not just fast. Leadership, in that sense, is less about control and more about stewardship: ensuring that innovation serves lasting human and civic purposes.
Service and Social Responsibility
Before founding CivicSentinel, I co-founded Kare Packages, a nonprofit that distributed thousands of COVID-19 protection kits and masks to unhoused communities across California. That experience shaped how I think about responsibility in technology. The project was a reminder that ethics begins with empathy, and that real impact comes from translating good intentions into tangible structures.
That same principle guides CivicSentinel today. The goal isn’t simply to develop advanced AI, but to ensure that these systems protect the communities most affected by them. Social good isn’t a parallel pursuit to innovation. It’s actually the condition that makes innovation meaningful.
The Road Ahead for Ethical AI
AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace. The systems that once lived in research labs are now embedded in critical infrastructure, influencing economies and democracies alike. That expansion brings immense promise but also immense responsibility.
CivicSentinel’s mission is to help society meet that responsibility with tools that foster transparency and trust. Our focus is not only on detecting threats but on proving that accountability can scale. I believe the future of AI depends on how well we align performance with principles. How we ensure that intelligence, in any form, remains accountable to the people it serves.
True progress in AI won’t be measured solely by what machines can do, but by how responsibly we guide them. My journey—from Stanford’s classrooms and research labs to founding CivicSentinel AI—has reinforced one conviction above all: technology earns its power through trust, and that trust must be engineered as carefully as the systems themselves.
